Book Review: The Brussels Connection by Terence Hamilton

the brussels connection book review

This book paints the journey of seven diverse individuals, whose life takes an unexpected turn following the tragic Islamic State terror incident, compelling them to forge a new path in their lives. The adage “Enjoy it while it lasts” echoes through the story, reminding us of life’s unpredictable nature.

Setting ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The author beautifully builds the story of different characters around the Islamic State terror incident, and the unexpected climax was worth reading the book. The tale centers around Tom (a British IT consultant), Roxy (a beautiful scuba instructor), Nena (a kinky techno DJ), Meena (a successful businesswoman), Philippe (a philandering owner of a restaurant chain), and Mark (a British soldier), all present at Brussels airport during the fateful incident.

Though some lives are lost, those who survive are compelled to reassess and reconstruct their futures. Tom’s transformation encapsulates this theme, as he seeks answers and inner peace in the aftermath.

Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The plot introduces us to Ibrahim, the orchestrator of the airport bombing collecting the ingredients with which to make bombs to target the airport. The plot follows the unsuspecting victims’ lives in the lead-up to the bombing and how they accidentally converge at the airport on the morning of the bombing.

The Belgian police try to thwart the attack, desperately pursuing Ibrahim and his cohorts across Brussels in the days before the attack.

You’ve to read the book to know how the aftermath unfolds and impacts the lives of all characters.

Writing Style ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The author’s writing style shines, grounded in meticulous research. The interconnected lives of the characters showcase Hamilton’s narrative prowess, effectively drawing readers into a world of reality and wonder.

Themes of love, passion, betrayal, and humanity intertwine, leaving no dull moment. Hamilton deftly unravels the threads, offering hidden lessons for readers to ponder. The book holds a solid 4 stars for its seamless narration and insightful exploration.

For a work of fiction, there is diligent and deep research into the subject matter – the root causes and process of Islamic radicalization, the background to the attacks, and in the backstories of completely different individuals. It portrays what exactly extreme and moderate Islam is (without any hidden agenda) and contrasts Islam with Western Liberalism.

Reasons to add this book to your TBR

As a staunch supporter of non-fiction, I was surprised by the resonance of “The Brussels Connection.” The story raises important questions about the clash of cultures, the role of religion, and the impact of extremism on both individuals and society as a whole.

The characters exude authenticity, inviting readers to immerse themselves in their journey. The plot twists, intriguing and skillfully executed, ensure the pages are turned without hesitation.

I’m pleased to say that overall, despite its difficult and complex subject matter, this sophisticated thriller won my heart. The characters were so real as if you yourself are part of the book, and the plot twists were so intriguing you couldn’t resist turning the pages. If you are a fiction lover, then it is a gem to be discovered.
